Troops to Teachers (TTT) was established in 1944 as a Department of
Defense program. Reflecting the focus of the No Child Left Behind
Act of 2001, the primary objective of TTT is to help recruit quality
teachers for schools that serve students from low-income families
throughout America. Funding has been appropriated for FY2007 to
provide financial assistance to eligible participants, provide
placement assistance, referral services and maintain a network of state
offices. Financial assistance may be provided to eligible
individuals as stipends up to $5K to help pay for teacher certification
costs or as bonuses of $10K to teach in schools serving a high
percentage of students from low-income families. Ohio Department
of Education is actively involved with recruiting VETs for the TTT
program. To teach in Ohio, you will need to follow the Ohio Department
of Education (ODE) standards for licensing and you have two
options. Either obtain a traditional teaching degree or pursue
licensure through the state’s alternative educator licensing
program. The majority of the TTT participants opt for the
alternative route. For this route you need to have a
baccalaureate degree or higher, 30 semester hours in the subject area
that you are interested in teaching, complete six semester hours of
professional education course work and pass the Praxis II subject area
exam. The Homepage for TTT is www.ProudToServeAgain.com or
